This is the last record with Neal Morse on Lead vox. It is our big/huge/rock opera sort of thing. It tells a story of a guy named SNOW. I like this record a lot actually. I think there is some amazing parts and songs.
The basics for this record were recorded to analogue tape. The over dubs though were done on a number of different platforms. I'm not really sure what all was used but I know there ADAT'S and a little bit of Pro-Tools towards the end.
Once again I used my I used my Gold Mapex Orion series kit on all the songs with a variety of different snare drums. I sing my parts through a Neuman M49. That has to be my favorite mic of all time. An M49 through a NEVE 1073 mic pre and an 1176 compressor is the magic combo for me.
I engineered a number of different bits throughout the record but Rich Mouser did the majority.
This was the first Spock's record that I got to write a song and sing lead. The song "Looking For Answers" is my contribution to SNOW's story. It is in the part of the story where he falls for a girl and she doesn't feel the same way about him and that really bums him out.
Speaking of singing, in the history of Spock's Beard I was always the background vocalist that sang all the high parts and SNOW is definitely no exception. I gave my falsetto a workout on this record. From "Love Beyond Words", to "Carie" I was able to sing as pretty and soft as I possibly can.
