One of many great memories recording with Kevin. Kevin was asked to contribute to a Yes tribute record. He asked Mike Keneally, whom he had a relationship with and recorded with, and Bryan Beller to come in along with me do try and cover the Yes song Siberian Khatru. This was how I got introduced to Mike and Bryan. I didn't know of Mike or Bryan, and was absolutely blown away at the musicianship of these two men. Just awesome players.
Now this will sound lame, but I had never even heard this song before the day we recorded it. I was never a big Yes fan growing up. I was way more into Genesis. So we listened to it and built it up. I used my Gretsch kit on that song. We changed the middle section of the song to a Bill Bruford song called Sierra Of Snow and you can really hear how good the Gretsch drums are in that section. I do a drum fill towards the end of the mid section where I go from top to bottom and the toms just sing. I love that kit. What may be a little weird for some proggers is that I was a very big Bruford fan, especially his solo records and what he did with King Crimson. Just not that into Yes. Well, we did the basics and started the over dubs. I was expecting to sing a little but not the lead part. I ended up being Jon Anderson. I still don't know how I hit some of those high notes. I think I had the help of Mr. Jack Daniels. I knew Kevin was a great musician but when I heard him play the piano part on the Bruford section I was blown away yet again. He killed that part. In my opinion this is a great cover version of this song.
